Its various midnight hues come from the elements which were present, pushed and molded together by the pressure of an entire mountain bearing down on it. When extracted the stone is rough and coarse and very large. Human ingenuity then slices it down into smaller pieces which are refined and gauged and crafted into the works of natural art you see on this page.
